Manager's Handbook for Handling Traumatic Events in the Workplace [Awesome/Download]

Posted by Employee Assistance Consultant, Daniel Feerst, BSW, MSW, LISW-CP on

I made a golden find on the Internet. You will want this resource!

Supervisor Training and Guidebook for Crisis and Tragedy

I am always on the hunt for great great resources for HR and EAP professionals that can help them manage employees and managers, and reduce behavioral risk to the bottom line of the work organization.

In the late 1990's, the U.S. Office of Personnel (OPM) published a guide for supervisors -- instructions and steps for handling all sorts of issues they might face when tragedy, crisis, loss, and a major incident occurs.

OPM created the "Manager's Handbook for Handling Traumatic Events".

This document is 36 pages and includes a nice set of "how to's" and "to-do's" regarding different types of crises.

I think you should take advantage of this document and download your own copy.

Here is the information from the table of contents:

  • When Tragedy Strikes at Work
  • How to Listen to Someone Who Is Hurting
  • Recovering from the Death of a Coworker
  • Supervising an Employee with Suicidal Concerns
  • Helping An Employee Recovering from an Assault
  • Managing After a Disaster
  • Managing When the Stress Doesn't Go Away
  • Workplace Violence: Stopping It Before It Starts
  • When Domestic Violence Comes to Work
  • Tips for Coping With Extreme Stress

Good stuff. You and I paid for this document, so take advantage of it.

I remember when working at one EAP and unexpected deaths or other tragedies happened; we had to our approach to management and employees, and quickly. I wish I had this handbook because of the practical advice and tips in it. So great.

In the future, I will create free handouts from this material, which is obviously in the public domain.

I know this document will give you more piece of mind when it comes to responding and offering guidance to managers on short notice who really want your help right away.
